Sorption of Methylene Blue on Polystyrene/Bentonite Film Composites

The method of mechanochemical dispersion of bentonite in a polystyrene solution was used to modify the polymer and obtain film materials with improved sorption characteristics with respect to the methylene blue (MB) thiazine dye. It is found that the kinetics of the dye sorption are described by the pseudo-first-order equation. The sorption equilibrium is described by the Langmuir isotherm. The values of the limiting sorption capacity and specific surface area of the composite are determined. It is shown that the sorption efficiency of the dye on the PS/bentonite composite increases tenfold as compared with the non-modified sorbent; the extraction rate increases from 10 to 90%. The method of IR spectroscopy is used to show that MB sorption on polystyrene and the PS/bentonite composite is accompanied by electrostatic and donor-acceptor interactions of the reaction sites of MB with the hydroxyl-containing groups of the composite.

One-Pot Multicomponent Synthesis and Anticancer Activity of 1,3-Cyclopentathiazine and Pyrimidothiazine Derivatives

Novel 1,3-cyclopentathiazine and pyrimidothiazine derivatives were synthesized starting from 7-benzyl-4-phenylcyclopenta[d][1,3]thiazin-2-amine (CTA) prepared by a one-pot multicomponent reaction of cyclopentanone, benzaldehyde, and thiourea. Cyclocondensation of CTA with benzylidenemalononitrile gave a pyrimidothiazine. Oxidation of cyclopentathiazine with hydrogen peroxide afforded the corresponding epoxide, while its alkylation with ethyl iodide yielded anN-ethyl derivative. Cyclopentylidenemalononitrile was reacted with formaline and carbon disulfide to obtain pyridine-4-carbonitrile and thiapyrane, respectively, and the reactions of cyclopentylidenemalononitrile with aryl isocyanate and aryl isothiocyanate gave condensed diimino-substituted cyclopentanaphthyridine-1,6-dione and dithiaacenaphthylene-3,8-diylidedibenzamide, respectively. Heating cyclopentanone with benzoyl isothiocyanate and benzoyl chloride produced a sulfide derivative and an enolic dione, respectively. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by spectral analysis, and some products were screened for anticancer activity.

Regional anesthesia is a commonly used adjunct to orofacial dental and surgical procedures in companion animals and humans. However, appropriate techniques for anesthetizing branches of the mandibular and maxillary nerves have not been described for rhesus monkeys. Skulls of 3 adult rhesus monkeys were examined to identify relevant foramina, establish appropriate landmarks for injection, and estimate injection angles and depth. Cadaver heads of 7 adult rhesus monkeys (4 male, 3 female) were then injected with thiazine dye to demonstrate correct placement of solution to immerse specific branches of the mandibular and maxillary nerves. Different volumes of dye were injected on each side of each head to visualize area of diffusion, and to estimate the minimum volume needed to saturate the area of interest. After injection, the heads were dissected to expose the relevant nerves and skull foramina. We describe techniques for blocking the maxillary nerve as well as its branches: the greater palatine nerve, nasopalatine nerve, and infraorbital nerve. We also describe techniques for blocking branches of the mandibular nerve: inferior alveolar nerve, mental (or incisive) nerve, lingual nerve, and long buccal nerve. Local anesthesia for the mandibular and maxillary nerves can be accomplished in rhesus macaques and is a practical and efficient way to maximize animal welfare during potentially painful orofacial procedures.
