Tuning the Electronic Structure of Fe(II) Polypyridines via Donor Atom and Ligand Scaffold Modifications: A Computational Study

Fe(II) polypyridines are an important class of pseudo-octahedral metal complexes known for their potential applications in molecular electronic switches, data storage and display devices, sensors, and dye-sensitized solar cells. Fe(II) polypyridines have a d(6) electronic configuration and pseudo-octahedral geometry and can therefore possess either a high-spin (quintet) or a low-spin (singlet) ground state. In this study, we investigate a series of complexes based on [Fe(tpy)(2)](2+) (tpy = 2,2′;6′,2 ”-terpyridine) and [Fe(dcpp)(2)](2+) (dcpp = 2,6-bis(2-carboxypyridyl)pyridine). The ligand field strength in these complexes is systematically tuned by replacing the central pyridine with five-membered (N-heterocyclic carbene, pyrrole, furan) or six-membered (aryl, thiazine-1,1-dioxide, 4-pyrone) moieties. To determine the impact of ligand substitutions on the relative energies of metal-centered states, the singlet, triplet, and quintet states of the Fe(II) complexes were optimized in water (PCM) using density functional theory at the B3LYP+D2 level with 6-311G* (nonmetals) and SDD (Fe) basis sets. It was found that the dcpp ligand scaffold allows for a more ideal octahedral coordination environment in comparison to the tpy ligand scaffold. The presence of six-membered central rings also allows for a more ideally octahedral coordination environment relative to five-membered central rings, regardless of the ligand scaffold. We find that the ligand field strength in the Fe(II) polypyridines can be tuned by altering the donor atom identity, with C donor atoms providing the strongest ligand field.

Synthesis, Characterization and Molecular Docking of Novel Bioactive Thiazolyl-Thiazole Derivatives as Promising Cytotoxic Antitumor Drug

Reactions of ethylidenethiocarbohydrazide with hydrazonoyl halides gave 1,3-thiazole or 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives according to the type of hydrazonoyl halides. Treatment of ethylidenethiosemicarbazide with hydrazonoyl halides and dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (DMAD) afforded the corresponding arylazothiazoles and 1,3-thiazolidin-4-one derivatives, respectively. The structures of the synthesized products were confirmed by IR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and mass spectral techniques. The cytotoxic activity of the selected products against the Hepatic carcinoma cell line (Hepg-2) was determined by MTT assay indicating a concentration dependent cellular growth inhibitory effect, especially for compounds 14c and 14e. The dose response curves indicated the IC50 (the concentration of test compounds required to kill 50% of cell population) were 0.54 M and 0.50 M, respectively. Confocal laser scanning imaging of the treated cells stained by Rhodamin 123 and Acridine orange dyes confirmed that the selected compounds inhibit the mitochondrial lactate dehydrogenase enzymes. The binding mode of the active compounds was interpreted by a molecular docking study. The obtained results revealed promising cytotoxic activity.

Phenothiazine (PTZ), a thiazine class heterocyclic compound, is a well-known electron donating system and has been widely used as a starting compound to prepare various phenothiazine dyes and pharmaceutically important compounds. Quinones and its derivatives are constituents of biologically active molecules serve as excellent electron-acceptor systems. Oxidation of PTZ by chemical and electrochemical methods often resulted into monohydroxylation of benzene ring moiety, S-oxidized and polymerized compounds as end products. Electrochemical oxidation of PTZ on a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) modified glassy carbon electrode in pH 7 phosphate buffers solution (PBS) has been investigated in this work. A highly redox active surface confined PTZ-bi-1,4-quinone derivative (PTZ-biQ) on MWCNT modified glassy carbon electrode, designated as GCE/MWCNT@PTZ-biQ, as a product was unusually observed. The GCE/MWCNT@PTZ-biQ showed well-defined redox peaks at E-1/2 = -0.07 and +0.29 V vs Ag/AgCl corresponding to surface confined electron-transfer behavior of the bi-quinone (acceptor) and PTZ-cationic radical species (donor) respectively. No such electrochemical characteristics were noticed when unmodified GCE was subjected to the electrochemical oxidation of PTZ. Existence of PTZ-biQ was confirmed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR and GC-MS (methanolic extract of the active layer) analyses. Position of biQ in PTZ-biQ as 1,4-quinone isomer was confirmed by observation of absence of copper-complexation with 1,4-quinone and H2O2 electrochemical reduction reactions at -0.1 V vs Ag/AgCl unlike to the specific copper-complexation and H2O2 reduction with 1,2-quinone isomer in pH 7. Cysteine (CySH) oxidation was studied as a model system to understand the electron-transfer function of the MWCNT@PTZ-biQ. A highly selective electrocatalytic oxidation and sensing by amperometric i-t and flow injection analysis of CySH at low oxidation potential, 0.3 V vs Ag/AgCl in pH 7 PBS with detection limit values (signal-to-noise ratio = 3) of 11.10 mM and 110 nM respectively, without any interference from other biochemicals like uric acid, dopamine, nitrite, citric acid and H2O2, unlike the conventional chemically modified electrodes with serious interference’s, have been demonstrated. Photocatalysis with Pt-Au-ZnO and Au-ZnO Hybrids: Effect of Charge Accumulation and Discharge Properties of Metal Nanoparticles

Metal-semiconductor hybrid nanomaterials are becoming increasingly popular for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Herein, a seed-assisted photodeposition approach is put forward for the site-specific growth of Pt on Au-ZnO particles (Pt- Au-ZnO). A similar approach was also utilized to enlarge the Au nanoparticles at epitaxial Au-ZnO particles (Au@Au-ZnO). An epitaxial connection at the Au-ZnO interface was found to be critical for the site-specific deposition of Pt or Au. Light on-off photocatalysis tests, utilizing a thiazine dye (toluidine blue) as a model organic compound, were conducted and confirmed the superior photodegradation properties of Pt-Au-ZnO hybrids compared to Au-ZnO. In contrast, Au-ZnO type hybrids were more effective toward photoreduction of toluidine blue to leucotoluidine blue. It was deemed that photoexcited electrons of Au- ZnO (Au, similar to 5 nm) possessed high reducing power owing to electron accumulation and negative shift in Fermi level/redox potential; however, exciton recombination due to possible Fermi-level equilibration slowed down the complete degradation of toluidine blue. In the case of Au@Au-ZnO (Au, similar to 15 nm), the photodegradation efficiency was enhanced and the photoreduction rate reduced compared to Au-ZnO. Pt-Au-ZnO hybrids showed better photodegradation and mineralization properties compared to both Au-ZnO and Au@Au-ZnO owing to a fast electron discharge (i.e. better electron-hole seperation). However, photoexcited electrons lacked the reducing power for the photoreduction of toluidine blue. The ultimate photodegradation efficiencies of Pt-Au-ZnO, Au@Au-ZnO, and Au-ZnO were 84, 66, and 39%, respectively. In the interest of effective metal-semiconductor type photocatalysts, the present study points out the importance of choosing the right metal, depending on whether a photoreduction and/or photodegradation process is desired.
