Background: Recent data have suggested a substantial incidence of atrial arrhythmias (AAs) in cardiac sarcoidosis (CS). Our study aims were to first assess how often AAs are the presenting feature of previously undiagnosed CS. Second, we used prospective follow-up data from implanted devices to investigate AA incidence, burden, predictors, and response to immunosuppression. Methods and Results: This project is a substudy of the CHASM-CS (Cardiac Sarcoidosis Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study; NCT01477359). Inclusion criteria were presentation with clinically manifest cardiac sarcoidosis, treatment-naive status, and implanted with a device that reported accurate AA burden. Data were collected at each device interrogation visit for all patients and all potential episodes of AA were adjudicated. For each intervisit period, the total AA burden was obtained. A total of 33 patients met the inclusion criteria (aged 56.1 +/- 7.7 years, 45.5% women). Only 1 patient had important AAs as a part of the initial CS presentation. During a median follow-up of 49.1 months, 11 of 33 patients (33.3%) had device-detected AAs, and only 2 (6.1%) had a clinically significant AA burden. Both patients had reduced burden after CS was successfully treated and there was no residual fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on positron emission tomography scan. Conclusions: First, we found that AAs are a rare presenting feature of clinically manifest cardiac sarcoidosis. Second, AAs occurred in a minority of patients at follow-up; the burden was very low in most patients. Research on metal-free room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials has been a hot topic and made great advances in recent years. However, developing amorphous metal-free RTP compounds whose RTP emission is insensitive to water and oxygen to expand their applications still remains a challenge. As a potential method for tumor treatment, tumor vaccine immunization induces a tumor-specific cellular immune response via immunization with tumor antigens. The delivery of exogenous antigen proteins into the cytoplasm of antigen-presenting cells is well known to induce an intensive cellular immune response for tumor treatment. In this work, we fluorinated a redox-responsive hyperbranched poly(amidoamine) (HPAA) with heptafluorobutyric anhydride to prepare a fluorinated HPAA (HPAA-F7) for use as a vaccine delivery system for antitumor therapy. The immunization results show that HPAA-F7 as a vaccine carrier could effectively promote the intracellular uptake and cytoplasmatic delivery of antigen proteins and induce potent antitumor cellular immunity. The novel vaccine carrier HPAA-F7 could be further developed for antitumor immunotherapy.

Compared with liquid electrolytes, the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE), which possesses improved thermal and mechanical stability, is believed the broadest potential application for satisfying the safety needs of advanced electro-chemical devices. However, some breakable SPEs could lead to catastrophic failure of batteries that triggered by a short circuit. In the present contribution, a new class of SPE containing disulfide bonds and urea groups is reported. The hydrogen bonding between the urea groups and disulfide metathesis reaction endows the SPE with a high level of self-healing without external stimuli at room temperature as well as ultrafast self-healing at elevated temperatures. The completely healed SPE with extreme damage shows a high self-healing efficiency and no changes in the ionic conductivity and cycling performance of the solid-state lithium-metal/LiFePO4 cell compared to the pristine one.

Biomimetic actuators have seemingly infinite potential for use in previously unexplored areas. However, large stresses and a rapid water response are difficult to realize in soft actuators, owing to which their practical applicability is currently limited. In this paper, a new method for designing and fabricating humidity-responsive sturdy hard actuator. By combining a rigid matrix and hydrophilic water domains consisting of dynamic interlocking cation-? blocks, high-performance polymer actuator was synthesized that swell rapidly in response to a water gradient in their environment, resulting in unprecedentedly large stresses. More critically, the strong interlocking cation-? blocks reform and the intermolecular distance is reduced when the water is removed, allowing the deformed actuator to revert its original shape. The proposed design principle can potentially be extended to produce different types of sturdy actuators with rapid water responsiveness.

The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified natural rubber composite (NR) filled with high contents of silica was prepared by a wet compounding and latex mixing process using a novel interface modifier cystamine dihydrochloride (CDHC) with coagulation ability. CDHC acts as a coagulation agent through electrostatic interaction with rGO, SiO2, and latex rubber particles during the latex-based preparation process, while in the obtained silica/graphene/natural rubber composites, CDHC acts as an interface modifier. Compared with the composites prepared by the conventional mechanical mixing method, the dispersion of both rGO and SiO2 in the composites made by a wet compounding and latex mixing process is improved. As a result, the obtained silica/graphene/natural rubber composite prepared by this new method has good comprehensive properties. A Dynamic Mechanical Test suggests that the tan delta values of the composites at 60 degrees C decrease, indicating a low rolling resistance with increasing the graphene content at a low strain, but it increases at a higher strain. This unique feature for this material provides an advantage in the rubber tire application.

Modified silica-based isoprene rubber (IR) composite has been designed and prepared by using a multi-functional silane, 2-aminoethyl 2-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)aminoethyl disulfide (ATD), as coupling agent. Such modification significantly improved the dispersity of silica in the corresponding composites, as verified by SEM observation. And the hardness, tensile strength, stress at definite elongation, tear strength and temperature rise as well as the value of dynamic loss coefficient ranging from 0 degrees C to 80 degrees C of silica/IR vulcanized composites, are significantly improved, especially with low ATD dosage (2-4 phr). Soft poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) based nanogels were prepared and surface-decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The applicability of the hybrid nanogels (PNVCL-AuNPs) as carriers for low molar mass substances was of special interest. AuNPs protected with a mixture of 11-azidoundecanothiol and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid were bound to propargyl functionalized PNVCL based nanogels. Acidic groups on the surfaces of AuNPs and PNVCL based nanogels stabilize the particle dispersions against precipitation above the phase transition temperature of PNVCL. Both the neat PNVCL nanogels and the PVCL-AuNPs shrink upon heating the dispersions. Even though the AuNPs are mainly located in the soft surface layer of the nanogels, the PNVCL-AuNPs respond to visible light as well as to radio-frequency (RF) irradiation by shrinking due to the AuNPs acting as nanoheaters. Interactions of linear PNVCL, PNVCL nanogels and PNVCL-AuNPs with two fluorescent probes were studied as function of increasing temperature. Once bound to the polymer the fluorescent probe may or may not be released from it, depending on its polarity and water solubility. Presence of AuNPs changed the release behavior of the water soluble charged fluorescent probe from the nanogels.

Objective: To determine the pattern of presentations and characteristics of patients at a psychiatric emergency services facility. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in November 2016 at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi, and comprised all patients presenting to the departmental emergency services. Data was documented on a pre-designed semi-structured proforma, and analysed using SPSS 22. Results: Of the 316 cases, 162(51.3%) were males and 154(48.7%) were females. The overall mean age was 30.78+/-13.09 years (range: 8-80 years). Psychiatric emergencies comprised suicidal attempt, excitement, violence, altered sensorium, altered/inappropriate behaviour and extrapyramidal symptoms / acute dystonia together constituting for 123(38.9%) of the total presentations, while there were 20(6.33%) cases of hysterical fits and 6(1.89%) with acute anxiety symptoms. Overall, 56(17.7%) subjects were found to have no psychiatric diagnosis, and 46(81.5%) of these were referred cases. Conclusion: Non-emergency visits constituted high percentage of emergency presentation.
