Therefore, the rational photochromic molecular design to control the bond dissociation in the excited state on demand expands the versatility for photoswitch materials beyond the conventional photochromic molecular frameworks. In this study, we synthesized novel photochromic molecules based on the framework of a radical-dissociation-type photochromic molecule: phenoxyl-imidazolyl radical complex (PIC). While the conventional PIC shows the photoinduced homolysis, the substitution of a strong electron-donating moiety to the phenoxyl moiety enables the bond dissociation process to be switched from homolysis to heterolysis. This study gives a strategy for controlling the bond dissociation process of the excited state of photochromic systems, and the strategy enables us to develop further novel radical and zwitterionic photoswitches.

Two novel double branched D-pi-A organic dyes (DB dyes) are synthesized to investigate the influence of the linkage location in DB dyes on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), where phenothiazine is introduced as a donor, thiophene-benzotriazole unit as the pi-bridge and cyanoacrylic acid as the electron-acceptor. The photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of the dyes are systematically investigated. The results show that the location of the linkage unit has a small effect on the physical and electrochemical properties of the dyes. However, when the dyes are applied in DSSCs, an obvious decline of short-circuit current (Jsc) and open-circuit voltage (Voc) is found by moving the linkage unit from the donor part to the pi-bridge part. The DSSC based on the dye DB-D with the linkage unit in the donor obtains an overall power conversion efficiency of 6.13%, which is about 68% higher than that (3.65%) of the DSSC based on the dye DB-B with the linkage unit in the pi-bridge. The DB-B based device exhibits a lower efficiency due to its serious aggregation and short electron lifetime. The results indicate that the linkage location of the dyes has a big effect on the performance of the DSSCs.

Two phenothiazine-based benzoxazole derivates (PVB and BPVB) were designed and synthesized, and their photophysical properties were studied and compared. Synthesis and electronic properties of monodisperse oligophenothiazines

Starting from N-hexylphenothiazine, a versatile construction kit of brominated and borylated phenothiazines can be easily prepared by a sequence of bromination, bromo-lithium exchange/borylation, and Suzuki coupling. Subsequent Suzuki arylation of the building blocks gives soluble, monodisperse, and structurally well defined oligophenothiazines in good yields. The molecular weights at the peak maximum (Mp), obtained by GPC (gel permeation chromatography), and the actual molecular weights of the oligomer series, obtained by mass spectrometry, show excellent correlation. A QM/MM conformational analysis for the complete series reveals that the obvious butterfly-shaped phenothiazine structure multiplies and significantly reduces the hydrodynamic volume of the oligomers. The electronic properties (absorption and emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry) give reasonable correlations with the chain length. With regard to the emission maxima, the effective conjugation length is already reached with the hexamer. Oligophenothiazines are highly fluorescent, with high fluorescence quantum yields, and are simultaneously highly electroactive, with low oxidation potentials.
