A new kind of redox responsive nanoparticles was prepared through the modification and crosslinking reaction of xanthan gum. The nanoparticles had regular spherical shapes with diameters ranging from 110 to 180 nm. The nanoparticles showed good redox responsiveness. Doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded in the nanoparticles via ionic interaction with SO3-, for increasing the drug loading rate and avoiding drug leakage. The in vitro drug release could be controlled by pH and reduction conditions simulated to the internal environment of tumor cells. The nanoparticles were biocompatible and could be potentially applied as anti-cancer drug vehicles for targeted release.

Inhibition performance of 2,2’-diaminodiethyl disulfide (DA) was studied against mild steel (MS) corrosion in 0.5 M HCl. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic (PD) polarization measurements were utilized to investigate the influence of inhibitor concentration and temperature on efficiency, as well as explanation of inhibition mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was utilized to investigate the surface damages due to corrosion, in the absence and presence of inhibitor molecules. PD data revealed that the studied molecule exhibits mixed type inhibitor behavior on steel surface. Moreover, the calculated free adsorption energy (Delta G(ads)(o)) value is 38.45 kJ mol(-1), which indicates to strong adsorptive interaction by both physical and chemical means. UV-Visible study results supported the idea that there is strong interaction between the surface with the molecule, via its -S and -N atoms. Chemically crosslinked recyclable photodeformable azobenzene (azo) polymer actuators with good stability (toward organic solvents and higher temperatures) and high processability and reconstruction ability hold great promise in many applications, but their development remains a challenging task. Herein, we report on for the first time a facile and highly efficient post-crosslinking method for addressing this issue. It involves first the synthesis of side-chain polymers bearing N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) carboxylate-substituted azo mesogens, fabrication of uniaxially oriented fibers from these azo polymers by the simple melt spinning method, and their subsequent post-crosslinking with cystamine (a diamine containing a disulfide bond) under mild conditions. The resulting chemically crosslinked fibers not only showed rapid and reversible photoinduced bending and unbending at ambient temperature as well as high mechanical strength and good solvent/heating stability, but also could be easily recycled into processable azo polymers in the presence of a reducing agent that can cleave the disulfide bond into thiol groups (i.e., tributylphosphine). In particular, the occurrence of the post-crosslinking reaction only on the thin surface layers of the azo polymer fibers afforded recycled polymers with large amounts of NHS carboxylate-substituted azo mesogens (together with a small amount of oxygen/heating-sensitive thiolsubstituted ones) in the first several (at least 5) recycling processes, thus allowing highly efficient reconstruction of photodeformable fibers with excellent photomobile properties by applying melt spinning and post-cross-linking (by using cystamine) methods. The strategy presented here opens the new possibility to the facile and efficient development of various advanced chemically crosslinked recyclable photodriven actuators.

A multifunctional drug delivery system (MDDS) based on near-infrared (NIR) imaging was developed in various conformations for the accurate diagnosis and therapy of cancer. However, it remains challenging to develop an ideal structure for an MDDS with both exact and variable functionality. Herein, we report a fluorescence color-changeable branched-form heptamethine cyanine dye (PEG-4-CyP) that has both a simple structure and various functionality. The PEG-4-CyP was not only able to construct the nanoparticle (NP) structure by encapsulating DOX (PEG-4-CyP/DOX), but also showed change in the NIR fluorescence color by reacting with glutathione (GSH). The PEG-4-CyP/DOX was broken down in the redox microenvironment inside cancers because of the reduction reaction of PEG-4-CyP to GSH. As a result, the NP disruption, DOX release, and reactivity of PEG-4-CyP to GSH were visualized by NIR fluorescence color-change. Moreover, PEG-4-CyP/DOX showed an excellent chemophototherapeutic effect in cancer cells. This NIR fluorescence color-change strategy demonstrates the applicability of PEG-4-CyP as a novel MDDS able to provide a variety of information with a simple NP structure. New bench-stable reagents with two diazonium sites were designed and synthesized for protein crosslinking. Because of the faster diazonium-tyrosine coupling reaction, hydrogels from the crosslinking of tobacco mosaic virus and the reagent DDA-3 could be prepared within 1 min at room temperature. Furthermore, hydrogels with the introduction of disulfide bonds viaDDA-4 could be chemically degraded by dithiothreitol. Our results provided a facile approach for the direct construction of virus-based hydrogels.

A series of polystyrene- and poly(methyl methacrylate)-dithioesters was subjected to aminolysis under ambient atmospheric conditions, i.e., in the presence of oxygen. The objective of this study was to synthesize and characterize cystamine dihydrochloride (CYS) crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose/quaternized chitosan (CMC/HACC) composite hydrogel film. Firstly, the glycidyl-based quaternary ammonium chitosan derivative (HACC) was synthesized using nucleophilic substitution reaction. Then HACC was analyzed by FTIR, (HNMR)-H-1 spectra and the composite films at different blending ratio of CMC and HACC were studied by rheology measurement, mechanical and swelling tests. When the composite films were prepared under optimized conditions (CMC: HACC = 7:1), they showed excellent mechanical properties (with improved 93.3% tensile strength and 2.3% elongation at break) and swellability (equilibrium swelling ratio increased 270%) compared to pure CMC film. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) was used as drug model which has broad-spectrum anticancer properties. The 5-FU/CMC/HACC composite films showed redox and pH responsive of drug release properties along with well biocompatibility. The in vitro cytotoxicity and cell apoptosis studies showed the drug loaded composite films with obvious toxicity against HepG2 cells especially in the presence of GSH. In addition, CMC/HACC composite films showed good antibacterial against S. aureus and E. coli, while pure CMC film had no antimicrobial activities. It can be concluded that CMC/HACC composite films can be potentially used as targeted drug delivery system. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of isocyanate-free polyurethanes (NIPUs), showing an intrinsic thermo-healing performance, have been synthesized from sustainable vegetable oil-based cyclic carbonates and bio-based amines. The bio-based contents of the NIPUs are higher than 78%. Their thermo-mechanical and self-healing performances are tailored simply by varying the feed ratios of the amines employed. The biomass linoleic acid dimer-based diamine plays a positive role in maintaining the higher thermal stability and good elasticity of the prepared NIPUs, the cycloaliphatic isophorone diamine contributes to high tensile strength, and cysteine-derived disulfide-containing cystamine (CA) enhances the self-healing efficiency. The combination of intrinsic hydrogen bonds existed in the NIPU matrix with the dynamic exchange reactions of disulfide bonds and the enhanced flexibility of NIPU networks results in 98.1% self-healing efficiency at 25 degrees C. The contributions of disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds to the healing efficiency were estimated by adjusting the composition of NIPUs, showing that the contribution of disulfide bonds to the healing ability is about 45.3% even at a low amount of CA (6.0 wt%).
