Methylammonium iodo bismuthate perovskite (CH3NH3)(3)Bi2I9 as new effective visible light-responsive photocatalyst for degradation of environment pollutants

In this work, the photocatalytic activity of a new visible light-responsive (CIH3NH3)(3)Bi2I9 hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) was addressed for the very first time in the treatment of aqueous solutions of model organic dyes. The photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a low temperature solvo-termal method, easily reproducible. The catalyst was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FP-IR), X-ray diffraction spectrometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques and UV diffuse reflectance spectrum. The efficiency of photocatalyst was tested for the removal of different type of dyes: fluorone dye (rhodamine B), thiazine dye (methylene blue) and azo dye (reactive Blue 4). Moreover, a multi-contaminated solution, with methylene blue and crystal violet (triarylmethane dye), was used to simulate a real industrial wastewater effluent. The results highlighted an increase of the photocatalytic activity respect the pristine precursor, bismuth iodide. The experiments showed that the values of removal was higher for rhodamine B respect the other dyes, with a removal of 98% after three hours under visible light irradiation. The efficiency of the photocatalyst was also confirmed under optimal conditions with high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The gradual disappearance of rhodamine B peak accompanied by the appearance of by-products peaks was investigated. The stability of the photocatalyst was tested for three consecutive re-cycles. Analysis on different visible light sources was performed: halogen provided higher efficiency respect LED lamp. The outcomes of the present work aim to open the possibility of considering HOIP as a new potential photocatalyst for contaminants treatment.

Tuning the Electronic Structure of Fe(II) Polypyridines via Donor Atom and Ligand Scaffold Modifications: A Computational Study

Fe(II) polypyridines are an important class of pseudo-octahedral metal complexes known for their potential applications in molecular electronic switches, data storage and display devices, sensors, and dye-sensitized solar cells. Fe(II) polypyridines have a d(6) electronic configuration and pseudo-octahedral geometry and can therefore possess either a high-spin (quintet) or a low-spin (singlet) ground state. In this study, we investigate a series of complexes based on [Fe(tpy)(2)](2+) (tpy = 2,2′;6′,2 ”-terpyridine) and [Fe(dcpp)(2)](2+) (dcpp = 2,6-bis(2-carboxypyridyl)pyridine). The ligand field strength in these complexes is systematically tuned by replacing the central pyridine with five-membered (N-heterocyclic carbene, pyrrole, furan) or six-membered (aryl, thiazine-1,1-dioxide, 4-pyrone) moieties. To determine the impact of ligand substitutions on the relative energies of metal-centered states, the singlet, triplet, and quintet states of the Fe(II) complexes were optimized in water (PCM) using density functional theory at the B3LYP+D2 level with 6-311G* (nonmetals) and SDD (Fe) basis sets. It was found that the dcpp ligand scaffold allows for a more ideal octahedral coordination environment in comparison to the tpy ligand scaffold. The presence of six-membered central rings also allows for a more ideally octahedral coordination environment relative to five-membered central rings, regardless of the ligand scaffold. We find that the ligand field strength in the Fe(II) polypyridines can be tuned by altering the donor atom identity, with C donor atoms providing the strongest ligand field.

The carane-and apopinane-based derivatives exhibited marked antiproliferative activity against a panel of human adherent cancer cell lines (HeLa, A2780, MCF7 and A431).

Synthesis, Characterization and Molecular Docking of Novel Bioactive Thiazolyl-Thiazole Derivatives as Promising Cytotoxic Antitumor Drug

Reactions of ethylidenethiocarbohydrazide with hydrazonoyl halides gave 1,3-thiazole or 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives according to the type of hydrazonoyl halides. Treatment of ethylidenethiosemicarbazide with hydrazonoyl halides and dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (DMAD) afforded the corresponding arylazothiazoles and 1,3-thiazolidin-4-one derivatives, respectively. The structures of the synthesized products were confirmed by IR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and mass spectral techniques. The cytotoxic activity of the selected products against the Hepatic carcinoma cell line (Hepg-2) was determined by MTT assay indicating a concentration dependent cellular growth inhibitory effect, especially for compounds 14c and 14e. The dose response curves indicated the IC50 (the concentration of test compounds required to kill 50% of cell population) were 0.54 M and 0.50 M, respectively. Confocal laser scanning imaging of the treated cells stained by Rhodamin 123 and Acridine orange dyes confirmed that the selected compounds inhibit the mitochondrial lactate dehydrogenase enzymes. The binding mode of the active compounds was interpreted by a molecular docking study. The obtained results revealed promising cytotoxic activity.

Ru-II(eta(6)-p-cymene) Complexes of Bioactive 1,2-Benzothiazines: Protein Binding vs. Antitumor Activity

1,2-Benzothiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide derivatives such as meloxicam are known to display numerous pharmacological activities. We prepared a series of 4-hydroxy-2-alkyl-2H-benzo[e][1,2]thiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide ligands 1a-f and their Ru((6)-p-cymene) complexes 2a-f, inspired by synergistic effects observed with other bioactive ligands coordinated to metal centres. The molecular structures of 1a, 2a, and 2b were determined by X-ray diffraction analyses. The stability of the metal complexes was characterized in DMSO and DMSO/H2O on the basis of H-1 NMR spectroscopy and their protein binding capabilities were studied using mass spectrometry. In vitro cytotoxicities of the Ru complexes were determined against human colorectal carcinoma (HCT116), non-small cell lung carcinoma (NCI-H460) and cervical carcinoma (SiHa) cell lines. The low levels of biological activity observed for these Ru complexes were put into context by considering their chemical reactivity with proteins. The binding of proteins resulted in cleavage of the benzothiazine backbone when the complex was present in concentrations equimolar with respect to protein.
